I think it depends on your goals and the type of writing you do. I know authors who have published books by submitting directly to publishers. In the kidlit world, only a limited number accept unagented submissions, so I wanted agent representation to broaden my opportunities. Since I want to be traditionally published hopefully with a Big 5 publisher, the agent route made most sense to me.
This is valuable insight. Always interested in reading about other authors’ publishing journey.

I do think timing and serendipity most certainly play a part too. It's a very subjective business too.
